the heart and the buffalo

Texoma has gotten some rain lately. There have been wildfires due to the heat and the drought and few places have shown it the way the Wichita Wildlife Refuge has.

But this weekend... well this weekend was different.

My husband and I decided we were going to find an earthcache called Heart Rock. This granite rock was created through erosion and is big enough for a couple of people to sit on and tall enough where you may need a boost up.

:

Then we saw this. Finally some life! The dark hide of the buffalo juxtaposed against the bright yellow sun flowers was breathtaking.

Was worth a morning trip

schools out for summer

Let me guess… summer is about here and you’re wondering what to do with the kids, right?  It’s going to be a long hot summer in the Texoma region.  It’s only the 1st week of May and we’re close to 100ᵒ already.
Here is an idea!
imageHit any on the lakes that are in the Texoma region.  There are many to choose from.  Lake Texoma comes to mind first.
Lake Texoma is located just off I35 South on the OK/TX Border.  Easy to get to and not too very far away for most of the Texoma Region
If you do happen to own your own boat or water craft, there are plenty of places to off load into the Lake, or, if you are like me and don’t happen to own any, you can rent one!
You don’t want to go up and back on the same day?  imageCan’t blame you.  You can always hook up at any of the RV hookups, bring your tent and camp, or camp in a little bit of luxury in one of the many cabins for rent.
Is there fishing? Of Course! Try your “hand” at catching one of the renowned monster catfish found in the Texoma Region!
The most important thing is to have fun and
Enjoy Texoma!!!

X just may not mark the spot

Doesn’t everyone love finding treasure?  Isn’t your day made when you find $5 bill in the coat you haven’t worn since last summer?
One of my favorite ways to see the area around me is to go on a treasure hunt. Within 100 miles of me are thousands of treasures awaiting us.
We geocache.  What is that? It’s a high tech treasure hunt115.  People hide treasure (caches) in ammo cans, tupperware, small plastic bottles – anything that is weather/water proof. You find treasure using a GPS and coordinates.
Inside these caches you will find a log (please sign and date) as well as in many, you’ll find SWAG.  SWAG can consist of just about anything you can imagine.  I’ve seen toys, beads, cards, poker chips, rubber bracelets, key chains and way too much to mention here.
My favorite SWAG to find is a trackable.  These can be coins or even dog tags that have a “tracking number”  If you intend to continue Geocaching, you can take the trackable, log it at geocaching.com, move it somewhere else, and log it as dropped.
What you absolutely need to geocache:
A sense of adventure and an afternoon.

What you might want:
GPS (Can download programs on your IPhone, Droid or Windows phones)
Some SWAG to trade
A pencil
(or pen)
Sunblock/Bug Spray
a hat/gloves/boots

Good Hunting

two frogs grill

image10**Ribbit**

The outside of Two Frogs can be very deceiving.  It looks kind of dingy, small and you wonder if you dare go in.  For us, we were too hungry not to, and besides that, it had many positive reviews on Yelp.
You walk into the place and it’s dark, and then as our eyes get adjusted, we find we are in a rock&roll haven in the middle of Oklahoma!  Not only were there guitar on the walls, but they were signed by the artist!  Photos everywhere – signed by the artist!  The food isn’t bad, but the atmosphere is amazing.  They 097have concerts on the weekends, sometimes big names and sometimes local bands.  This small place is amazing! The food you’re going to get range from a chicken sandwich to catfish to steak – and it has a full service bar.

***SWEET***

This place is kid friendly during the day, but I don’t think I’d bring any children during the evening or during the concert weekends.
Prices are reasonable – and Ardmore is quite an interesting area in and of itself.

Just be careful – I did get hit by a rogue highchair!!!  But when you do, you get free margaritas!!!!!

You don’t need much time to

Enjoy Texoma!!!

a waterfall in Oklahoma?

Lasimaget year, the Texoma Region proved one thing… it can get HOT.  We have several   weeks over 100 degrees and rain was something the had lost it’s sense of direction.

During one of those incredibly hot weekends, OG mentioned a waterfall he had heard about over by the City (Oklahoma City).  Skeptically I got on Google and found it!

Turner Falls, Davis, Oklahoma

Once we got there, we found a several swimming areas to include the pond surrounding imagethe falls.  You’ll find a small beach with changing rooms and showers (whew!)

You’ll also find a castle… yes, a castle on the premises.  This castle has a real old world feel to it, even though the stone was cut out of the surrounding area.
(Careful – they say it’s haunted)

After we were done swimming and checking out the castle, we decided to go find something to eat, and take a route home we had never taken before.

We went South on 35, I opened up my YELP and was guiding us to a resteraunt that had several good reviews.

Then I saw it….

But that is a story for another day.

The Abernathy Boys

Would you allow your 10 year old to take your 6 year old to New York to meet up with an old friend all alone?
Well, young Bud and Temple Abernathy took that trip, not by plane, train or automobile, but on horseback in 1910.

Their story is a good one. These two young boys begged their family to let them take a trip from South West Oklahoma to New York City to meet an old family friend as he came home from Safari.
It was the 5th of April when Bud and Temple got on their horses and started east. For two months the rode, meeting new people and like most guys, fell in love with that new invention, the automobile.

After making it to New York, they met up with that old family friend, Teddy Roosevelt.
After meeting up with their famous "uncle" and enjoying the big city, the boys bought a 1910 Brush Automobile and drove home in 23 days.

Today they are celebrated historical figures in Frederick, OK. If you have a day, and the kids are bored, take a ride to Tillman County to see the young men celebrated in sculpture, and visit the museum next door.

Enjoy Texoma!
